What is Integrative Veterinary Medicine? Traditional Veterinary Medicine is the study and practice of modern veterinary medicine. Integrative veterinary medicine combines modern medical practices with Veterinary Western Herbal Medicine and includes complementary therapies for the medical treatment of animals. Chinese Herbal Veterinary Medicine may also be included.
TRADITIONAL VET MEDICINE
Routine and specialist medical consultations and therapy.
Routine and specialist animal surgical procedures.
Medications used primarily include modern-day pharmaceuticals.
This is the focus of modern university veterinary study.
VETERINARY HERBAL MEDICINE
Using the science & traditions of Veterinary Herbalism, medicinal plants are blended to form a medical prescription. We can use dry or liquid herbs in powders, tonics, or teas. These treatments may be combined with traditional pharmaceuticals, to provide holistic care - we treat the "whole animal", not just the presenting disease or condition.
All modern-day pharmaceuticals originate from herbal medicine, which has been practiced for hundreds of years. Modern-day science now helps us to identify and understand how herbal medicine works. Even as recently as the 1960s, veterinary students had to grow, process, and study herbal plants to be used in veterinary practice.
COMPLEMENTARY THERAPIES
Accelerated Physical Care for all animals is provided by therapy other than standard medical and surgical procedures:
Veterinarians interested in expanding their veterinary medical knowledge beyond traditional veterinary studies will be required to undertake further Continuing Veterinary Education in their area of interest. For example, further education will be required to become qualified in Veterinary Western Herbal Medicine and be able to practice as a qualified Veterinary Herbalist.
